Brian woke up to the site of his cousin sleeping next to him. It
wormed his heart to see him sleeping peacefully next to him when he thought
that they would abandon him. Howie and AJ were sharing the bed next to his.
They had all stayed. Brian smiled warmly.
He slipped quietly out of bed and snuck to the bathroom. He needed
a shower and he didn’t want to wake the guys up. Shutting the door behind him,
he sighed when none of his friends moved.
The warm water felt so good as it coursed over his stiff body. His
head ached softly. That’s what a night of crying would do to you. His stuffed
head was finally clearing and he was able to think again. But the first thought
that came to his mind was the last thing he wanted to think of. Nick.
His blue eyes were following him, watching his every move.
Platinum blond hair stuck out every where, gelled to perfection. His lips
curled into a mocking smile and words of endearment and hate all came out of
their lips at the same time.
Fresh tears sprang to his eyes and he fought them back. Nick would
never find out so he didn’t have to worry about any hate filled things coming
from him. But since he can’t find out about Brian’s secret, he didn’t have to
worry about words of endearment either.
A soft knock on the door brought him from his thoughts. He forced
his voice not to waver as he called out to the person at the door.
“Yeah?” He cursed the slight waver that entered his voice. “Who is
it?”
“It’s me.” Kevin’s voice answered back. “Are you okay in there?”
Brian had to smile to himself. Like he said before, ‘Super Dad’
knew when anyone was in trouble. He could hear when anyone was crying.
“I’m fine.” He answered back. “I’ll be out in a second.”
“Alright.” Kevin hesitated for a moment before continuing. “We
need to talk after you get out. We’ll be in the bed room then.”
Brian’s heart stopped beating. He knew what they needed to talk
about. Nick. Well not about him, but what they were going to do about him. They
had promised him they wouldn’t tell him, but they couldn’t keep him in the dark
either. Nick had a very good way of picking up on these things. He always knew
when one of the guys was trying to hide something from him. Even more so when
it was Brian.
Sighing heavily, Brian dragged himself out of the warmth of the
shower. He didn’t want to discuss this, but he knew he had too. They had to
have something to tell Nick when he started asking questions.
Like Kevin had said, they were waiting on the beds watching TV.
From what Brian could see it was the Entertainment channel. They were showing
the life of movie star Josh Hartnett. When they felt Brian’s presence, AJ
pointed at the screen.
“What about him Rok?” He asked. “Think he’s cute?”
“Defiantly.” Brian answered with out thinking. “One of the cutest.
And Ewan McGregor is right behind him.”
Suddenly realizing what he had said, Brian blushed a deep crimson.
He looked down sheepishly, suddenly becoming very interested in the carpet.
He’d never said anything like that to anyone but his few boyfriends. And now
here he was announcing it to his friends.
“S-sorry.” He stammered. “I didn’t mean to get carried away.”
“Don’t worry about it.” Howie chuckled. “I think it’s kinda cute.”
This made Brian blush even deeper. His cheeks were actually
growing warm.
“So what did ya’ll want to talk about?” He asked, desperate to
change the subject.
“Nick.” Kevin answered, confirming Brian’s fears. “He’ll know we
are keeping something from him and I can’t lie for to long. The kid knows these
things. We have to come up with a mutual lie until you can tell him Brian.”
The blush quickly left Brian’s face as he paled to a snow white.
Kevin was telling him he had to tell Nick that he was gay. And that he was in
love with him. He couldn’t do that! He knew just how Nick would react. First
would come the shock, and then would come the unrelenting hatred.
“I can’t tell him!” Brian begged dropping to his knees in front of
Kevin. “He’ll hate me! I can’t have him hating me! It would crush me, end my
world. I’d die if I couldn’t at least have his friendship!”
Hot tears where now flowing down his cheeks. He could tell that
Kevin was debating his answer. That was the only reason it was taking him so
long to answer. Finally he spoke.
“You have to tell him.” He spoke firmly. “But don’t tell him about
your love. He has no logical reason to hate you if you don’t tell him you love
him.”
Brian sat there sniffling for a few seconds. The saddest thing was
Kevin was right. Maybe Nick would cool down on the homophobic jokes if knew
that Brian was gay. Or maybe he’d just be harsher. But whatever the case, he
couldn’t lie to Nick, the person he loved.
“I-I’ll tell him.” He sniffed. “Just give me time! This won’t be
easy, and I’m likely to chicken out the first couple tries.”
Kevin nodded obviously pleased with the answer. This was what he
wanted. He knew that keeping a secret would prove hazardous to their careers
and he wouldn’t have that.
A sudden knock at the door caused Brian to jump from his slouched
position on the floor. But he made no move to get up. Howie sighed, and went to
answer the continuous knocking. He flung open the door to see a surprising
cheerful Nick standing there.
“Howie?” He questioned. “This is Brian’s room right? I was looking
for him, not you.”
“Uh, yeah.” Howie answered slowly. “Brian just got out of the
shower. Come in and join the party.”
Nick smiled and walked past Howie into the bedroom. He was shocked
to see, both Kevin and AJ in there with a half dressed Brian. But soon he was
laughing again.
“Well if this isn’t one big orgy!” He laughed. “Did ya’ll get
freaky with it fag-like style last night?”
Kevin watched as Brian curled up into a tighter ball. Anger filled
up in his stomach and he had to force himself not to tear Nick limb from limb.
“Shut up Nick.” AJ growled. “That’s so rude! Grow up and get a
life!”
Nick scowled at AJ. “I was just kidding.” He snapped back. “And
besides, this is Brian’s room. I know ya’ll wouldn’t be doin’ it doggy style in
here. That’s against his religion or some shit like that. God hates gays.”
Brian suddenly felt ill. He jumped up and ran to the bathroom.
Falling hard to his knees in front of the toilet, he emptied whatever was in
his stomach. He stayed there until the heaving had stopped. A soft hand laid on
his back and Brian jumped at the thought that it might be Nick.
“You okay?” Howie asked softly.
Brian relaxed just enough so that the headache was to a dull
throb. He shook is softly but it still caused him to groan.
“He’s right.” He whispered so even Howie had to strain to hear it.
“God does hate me. It’s against all the rules in the bible. I’m going to hell
when I die.”
“Brian you aren’t going to hell.” Howie assured him, fighting the
anger he felt toward Nick. “God loves all his children and just want them to be
happy. And besides, why would he allow love to ever cause one to go to hell. It
doesn’t make senece.”
Brian smiled at Howie. He was right. God wouldn’t allow someone to
go the tortures that Brian feel just to send them to hell in the end.
“Now come on,” Howie soothed, helping Brian up, “Let’s get you to
bed.”
Brian was relieved to see that Nick had left. AJ must have made
some story up, because he was gone as well. He slowly crawled in between his
sheets and curled up in a ball.
“I told him you were sick and that’s why we spent the night.”
Kevin sighed. “But you have to tell him soon. It took me forever to convince
him that’s what was wrong with you.”
Brian and nodded and squeezed the tears back. He knew he couldn’t
do this to his friends or his cousin. He would tear them apart. And that’s the
last thing he wanted to see.
“Alright.” He whispered. “I’ll tell him tonight. I promise. But I
can’t promise you we’ll be friends in the morning.”
