Tanja Nielsen has been a menace to internet society dating back to early 2006. It was then that a reader emailed me to notify me that a work of Backstreet Boys fan fiction, “Faceless,” which was linked on my website, Dreamer’s Sanctuary, had been reposted on a fan fiction forum for the British band Busted, with the character names changed from the Backstreet Boys to members of Busted. I immediately went to the forum to investigate, and sure enough, the story was, otherwise, exactly the same.

Upon further investigation, I came across another story from my website… and then another… and another… until I’d found nine stories total, including one of my own, all posted by the same user, Tanja. I posted in every thread containing a plagiarized story and effectively drove Tanja off the forum, which is no longer online. I thought that would be the end of the matter.

I was wrong.

Several months later, in September 2006, Tanja popped up again, this time on a Busted and McFly fanfic forum on a site called Refresh. Once again, a search through the forum yielded twelve more plagiarized stories, this time mostly stolen from the website Absolute Chaos. Again, my fellow writers and I posted messages on the forum and drove Tanja away, but not without a lot of hassle from the forum’s moderators and members, who were too ignorant to see the truth and defended Tanja, whose stolen stories they had enjoyed. It took one of us physically mailing a massive packet of proof of the plagiarism from Canada to England in order to get the site owner to ban Tanja and remove the threads.

Still, after all that trouble, it seemed Tanja was gone, and the issue was resolved. But she’d come back once; we should have known she’d be back again. This girl is like effing Jason Vorhees; she never stays gone for long.

Sure enough, she re-emerged in early 2009 under a new alter-ego, “Jess.” Some probing into Refresh revealed that Tanja never left, simply registered a new account and became “Jess.” “Jess” abandoned the Backstreet Boys fandom, which she had been plagiarizing for a year, and moved onto other fandoms not yet onto her: High School Musical, Twilight, Supernatural, even original fiction.

Intensive searching revealed forty-five more counts of plagiarism by “Jess.” Understandably, several authors of the plagiarized stories complained to Refresh, and “Jess’s” account was also suspended.

Meanwhile, Tanja unwisely joined Absolute Chaos and its forum, the very website from which she had plagiarized three years earlier. Through this, we were able to track her to Twitter. It was here that she plagiarized again, by posting a Supernatural fanfic in 140-character increments.

Again, we called her out, and again, she disappeared by protecting her updates, and again, her foolish friends united around her, buying her lame excuses and defending her thievery. But we have united against her, and we will not let her get away with plagiarism without a fight.

On behalf of everyone from whom she has stolen, I ask you to support the cause, fight plagiarism, and bring Tanja down!

updates:

6/22/09: Tanja’s Twitter account, LuckyBailey, is no more. Was she removed by Twitter for copyright violation, or did she delete her own account out of embarrassment? We don’t know. Congrats to everyone who helped drive her off yet another platform for plagiarism!

6/22/09: Apparently Tanja was FRAMED! Oh noes!!! According to her BFF, someone close to her made those accounts under her name and did all that plagiarizing! Tanja has only EVER posted on Facebook and Twitter… and she wasn’t plagiarizing that Supernatural fic she tweeted; she was just posting it because she liked it! And, you know, accepting praise for “her” story because, well… I guess she liked that too! =D What this doesn’t explain is how her evil twin from a parallel universe was able to register all these Lucky-whatever accounts under the same email address SHE used for her Twitter, tanja_hjem@yahoo.dk. Don’t most sites email you when you register a new account? Gosh, some of them even require verification you can only get through email. WEIRD, huh?! This evil twin must be some kind of super-hacker to pull that off without Tanja knowing!! She’s such a victim! =P

6/23/09: Most of the threads on Refresh Tanja started as LuckyMe or ~Jess~ with plagiarized stories have been deleted, thanks to the help of one of the moderators, Playbunny. If you try to view a link and it gives you an error message, tells you to log in, or says that the thread isn’t there, that’s why. Playbunny also added an announcement/explanation to the stickied thread titled “PLEASE READ” that is at the top of all fanfic forums on Refresh, in order to let the members there know.
