And though he wasn\u2019t entirely happy to admit it, the decision he had made was eating his heart out.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cSo I gotta ask for one, huge favor&#8230;\u201d Aly said once they were done with their usual bickering.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cAnything, babe, just tell me and consider it done,\u201d Nick replied in his flirtatious voice, wiggling his eyebrows as if Aly could see.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>And for the first time in many years of their friendship, Aly did not scoff nor respond with a lame or smartass comment.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Instead, she just sighed.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI don\u2019t know how I actually got the courage to call you up to actually propose this to you when I actually know how you will react, and when it is actually not something that I\u2019d ever-\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cActually, you talk too much without saying anything, so just tell me.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI\u2019ve thought this through, long and hard. I even tried to do it on my own, but seriously, my mind is just not working anymore, and you and I are on the same side-\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWe\u2019re not on the same side, babe, but you\u2019re more than welcome to join as our ally; we never say no to fresh faces. Tell me.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201c- and I know how hard it is to do something against the book when you are-\u201c<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cJUST TELL ME, ALY!\u201d Nick raised his voice exasperatedly. \u201cJust tell me, babe. What do you want me to do?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Another deep sigh.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cLet my brother go.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As Nick\u2019s mind replayed the conversation he\u2019d had a few days ago, word by word, he felt an invisible hand tightening its grip on his throat. His vision blurred, his ears went deaf because of the blaring motor sounds of the jet skis, and his grip tightened on the handles, turning his knuckles white. Yet, his knees felt wobbly.<\/p>\n<p>He should have hung up on her immediately the second he heard those words. He shouldn\u2019t have let her continue; he shouldn\u2019t have let her count all of her excuses and try to knock her reasoning into him. He wasn\u2019t the person who did everything by the book, but he wasn\u2019t the type to let a criminal go either. There was nothing that could be said in his defense if the incident was discovered. He should have taken him hostage; the agency wouldn\u2019t have hurt him if he\u2019d been cooperative and given them the information needed. They would have even let him go then.<\/p>\n<p>He should have told Aly that; he should have persuaded her that that would be the best for everyone.<\/p>\n<p>But no, he\u2019d wanted to play the hero. The knight in fucking shining armor.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Now it was his time to sigh.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI know,\u201d Aly continued, gaining confidence from his one-second pause, \u201cit\u2019s not the easiest thing to do, and I shouldn\u2019t have even considered you for this, but you\u2019re the only person that I can count on. I can\u2019t do it myself. I don\u2019t know if I\u2019d be able to go undercover without him noticing me, and he just wouldn\u2019t listen to me if I told him to run away anyway\u2026\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Nick remained silent on the other end.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cAll I\u2019m asking from you,\u201d Aly took a deep breath, \u201cis to tell him to just disappear when you come across him. Tell him to let go and go back home.\u201d Nick heard her gulping, probably swallowing back her tears. \u201cI can\u2019t lose him, Nick. I can\u2019t bear losing him when I know what he\u2019s up to. I can\u2019t just sit here and do nothing. He\u2019s the only family I have. I know he\u2019s been in deep shit, but he\u2019s a good person deep down, and he\u2019ll go back to being a normal man if I can be there for him more.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Nick let out another deep sigh.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cYou know, I\u2019d do the same if your family was in a similar situation, Nick.\u201d Aly sniffled, which was very odd for the woman he had known for years. \u201cIf you had a sister, who was messing with the wrong people, doing the wrong things, I\u2019d do everything in my power to save her.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And just like that, she\u2019d had him; those words ripped his heart apart. And the worst thing was, he didn\u2019t have one single, tiny piece of doubt in his mind that Aly would ever dodge if she were in his shoes.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>He cleared his throat.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cNick?\u201d Aly asked, full of hope.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>A woman\u2019s a woman, always, Nick thought to himself. Erratic change of moods, in mere seconds. In the hopelessness of the situation, he found himself cracking a smile.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cYou\u2019re gonna pay me back.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cSo you\u2019ll do it?!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI said you\u2019re gonna pay me back.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cAnything you want, consider it done.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cBe careful what you agree to, Sapphire.\u201d Nick couldn\u2019t help but softly chuckle at her sudden thrill.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cJust say it, and it\u2019s a deal.\u201d Aly sounded more content, and he realized he preferred her to stay that way, always.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cJust sing for me, one night at the club, any song you want, but it\u2019s going to be a private performance for me only. Been a while since I\u2019ve seen you sing.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI\u2019ll make sure to pick your favorite tunes.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cFollowed by a lap dance?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>He heard the familiar scoff on Aly\u2019s end. \u201cIn your dreams, pervert.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Theirs was a love\/hate relationship.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The sudden sound of an explosion jolted him, detracting his attention from his thoughts. Glancing his head over his shoulder, Nick saw the remnants of the last explosion before the kraken submerged into the deep blues of the Bermuda Triangle.<\/p>\n<p>Just as it disappeared, so too did the uneasy feelings he\u2019d had about his decision. He believed that he\u2019d taken the initiative to decide what would result in one human being\u2019s own good.<\/p>\n<p>What was done was done, anyway.<\/p>\n<p>He shook his head and rode the water jet in full throttle to catch up with Emerald and Jay.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">***<\/p>\n<p>A couple scribbles here and there. A little bit of a sharpening on the chin and the neck. Darkening the shading on the hair to enhance the contrast with the skin. Adding a richer blue color just to emphasize the effect. Perfect.<\/p>\n<p>Nick had just put his pen down when his phone rang, only to take him out of the depths of his soul and make him realize that his butt had gone numb from sitting in the same position for a long time. Long enough to see that the sun was setting, making the room dim. He shifted and reached to his nightstand to grab his phone. His eyes lit up when he saw the caller ID.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have to admit, I\u2019m getting used to hearing from you this often, Sapph.\u201d He spoke roguishly, eyeing the sketch he\u2019d been drawing. Nearly perfect.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHush,\u201d the caller requested in a soft tone. \u201cJust let me say what I want to say before you open up your big mouth and say something stupid to ruin my mood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nick opened his mouth to protest, but he knew better.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThank you,\u201d Aly expressed sincerely. \u201cThank you so much for blessing my brother and letting him go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Having one of his rare moments, when he was speechless and actually shy to receive any kind of appreciation, Nick cleared his throat loudly. \u201cNah, it\u2019s not a big deal, Sapph\u2026\u201d he said, trying to sound as nonchalant as he could. If there was one person to whom he wouldn\u2019t brag about the stuff he did, it was Aly. Then again, he couldn\u2019t really find anything to brag about what he had done anyway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t try to underestimate what you did, Nick,\u201d she said. \u201cYou put your ass on the line for me, and I appreciate it. Know and accept that before I tell you to shove your pride up your ass.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He laughed heartily and looked down at his sketch once more. It felt like he was having a conversation with her face to face. He hadn\u2019t seen her in a while, yet, he was pretty damn sure that she still wore that sad look on her face, her blue eyes reflecting the pain and the struggle she\u2019d been through. Her lips curved downwards, full and cherry red, while her thick, black hair cascaded down to her shoulders.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, how was the mission?\u201d Aly asked, trying to ease the intensity of the situation, without knowing she had also distracted Nick from his thoughts of her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSalty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSalty?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd a bit bloody and explody.\u201d Nick sighed, rubbing his temple with his thumb. \u201cYou know how it usually goes. And I don\u2019t think you\u2019d like pirates at all. They\u2019re&#8230; meany.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think you swallowed too much seawater on this mission.\u201d Aly couldn\u2019t help but chuckle. \u201cBut really, Nick, how could you manage to let him go without the others noticing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey were too busy flirting with each other. They wouldn\u2019t have noticed if I\u2019d let go of a shark, so your brother wasn\u2019t that much trouble.\u201d He shifted uncomfortably on his bed. He didn\u2019t feel like talking about this any longer; he\u2019d run it through his mind enough times already.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said you gave him a spare raft and told him to bail during a distraction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExactly what I meant when I said the mission was a little explody. It wasn\u2019t hard to lose track of him,\u201d Nick explained. \u201cSo you spoke to him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYeah, he called me the other day to tell me he was safe. Apparently, after you let go of him, he came across a cruise ship, and he managed to make them believe that he was a fisherman whose boat had been shipwrecked during the battle.\u201d Aly sighed. \u201cThat\u2019s him for ya. He can convince anyone to do anything, and he\u2019ll make it sound like the right thing to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRuns in the Mendez family, I believe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Aly was silent on the other end for a second. \u201cI\u2019m gonna meet him in a little while. I want to see him with my own eyes, to believe that he\u2019s actually doing okay. All of this happening lately is like a bad dream.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nick nodded as if she could see him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThank you again, Nick. I will never forget this. I owe you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSpeaking of gratitude\u2026\u201d Nick piped up. His face suddenly beamed, remembering their deal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRight, right. How does next Saturday sound?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBe at the club at ten,\u201d Aly replied. \u201cI\u2019ll start with your favorite song.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd finish off with a lap dance?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The familiar scoff.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I had given you a penny every time you mentioned that-\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nick grinned devilishly. \u201cI\u2019d be a fucking Rockefeller, baby.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Theirs was a love\/hate relationship, after all. And it felt comfortable.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">***<\/p>\n<p>The beach was deserted, except for a few squawking seagulls. The sun had started to set, filling the sky with an orange-ish hue.<\/p>\n<p>Mimicking the beach, Aly felt empty and lonely. Everything still felt so anti-climatic. What had she gained from this? Not a damn thing.<\/p>\n<p>The sound of the waves crashing along the shore was almost melodic. Everything seemed so insignificant to her just then. For a mere moment, she could pretend everything was okay, that her life was normal.<\/p>\n<p>Just for a moment.<\/p>\n<p>Aly sighed heavily; it was over, for now, at least. When she turned away from the ocean, she spotted her brother preparing to leave. They stared at each other in silence, then walked toward each other.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo\u2026 I guess this is it\u2026 See you later, okay?\u201d Aly asked softly.<\/p>\n<p>He continued to stare silently, then turned to leave.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s it, huh? You\u2019re not going to say anything to me, even after I\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never asked you to do anything for me, got that?\u201d he grumbled.<\/p>\n<p>Aly winced, but her eyes grew wide when he whirled on her with a cold stare.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou didn\u2019t have to do anything, you hear me? This was my doing. Mine. You didn\u2019t need to be\u2026 You shouldn\u2019t have\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, I\u2019m sorry, but you\u2019re my brother; I couldn\u2019t just let you\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes\u2026 yes you could\u2019ve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, you see, that\u2019s where we\u2019re different. I couldn\u2019t just leave you; I couldn\u2019t let anything happen to you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd why\u2019s that, huh? Cause you\u2019re good and pure, right? Right?! We\u2018re on two different paths; we cannot change that. Would you be willing to join me? Could you do that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes started burning; she opened her mouth to say\u2026 what? Words escaped her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYeah, that\u2019s what I thought,\u201d he muttered, starting to turn away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut it doesn\u2019t have to be that way! You could join us\u2026 join me\u2026\u201d Aly blurted out, wanting to do anything to keep him near her.<\/p>\n<p>He shook his head. \u201cNo, I don\u2019t think I can.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAly,\u201d he sighed, \u201cdon\u2019t, okay? Just stop. Nothing\u2019s going to change, okay? So forget it. I\u2018m happy doing what I do; I like it. End of story.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Aly watched as he turned and walked away. Her heart was pounding so hard, she could hear it in her ears. She couldn\u2019t let it end this way.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWait!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He froze at her words as she rushed toward him, wrapping him in a tight hug. Though he flinched at her embrace, his gaze softened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAly,\u201d he whispered, wrapping his arms around her tightly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStay safe,\u201d she murmured, her face buried in his chest.<\/p>\n<p>His lips turned up in a slight smile. \u201cI will\u2026 just for you, okay?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Aly nodded, not trusting herself to speak. She felt his arms drop away from her, and he gently untangled himself. After a few steps backward, he hurried down the deserted sand. This time, she didn\u2019t stop him.<\/p>\n<p>As she watched him disappear around the cliffside, she wondered if it was all worth it. Fighting for the world and protecting those who couldn\u2019t protect themselves. Was it worth it? Was it enough?<\/p>\n<p>In the end, she wasn\u2019t sure. She\u2019d lost so much because of her choices, and every time, it got harder and harder, the loss bigger, greater than before. She\u2019d let her brother walk away this time, but would there be a next time? And if there was, would she be able to let him walk away and not follow?<\/p>\n<p>Aly stared at the spot in the sand where her brother had just stood. She didn\u2019t notice the single tear that made its way down her cheek, splashing like a raindrop on the ground beneath her trailing footsteps.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">***<\/p>\n<p>A full moon had risen over the Gulf of Mexico. In the swampland of the Everglades, some twenty miles inland, Dr. Rough watched bright moonbeams stream through the cypress trees from the bay window inside the FANS headquarters.<\/p>\n<p>As the blue light spilled over his face, he sighed and stroked the ferret on his shoulder. Dr. Twitches closed his eyes in contentment, and Dr. Rough smiled crookedly at their reflection in the glass. \u201cYes, Twitches,\u201d he murmured, \u201cnight has fallen once again. But soon enough, the sun will return. It will rise on a new mission, a new day for Dr. Rough to wreak havoc upon the world! You see\u2026 our hopes are never darkened for long.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A shadow passed over his eyes as a meandering cloud smothered the moon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have a new hope, don\u2019t we, my pet? We were wise to plant the seed early, now that our dear Drums is unable to\u2026 lend a hand. And when it\u2019s time for our little seed to spring forth and blossom, Himitsu Takana won\u2019t know what hit them.\u201d He sniggered malevolently.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI dunno, Dr. Rough, I think you may be underestimating ol\u2019 HimTak. They\u2019ve thwarted all your missions so far, haven\u2019t they?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Rough scowled, but when he turned around to face the owner of the voice, he twisted the expression into a smirk. Sexi posed against the doorframe, eyeing him coolly. Were she one of his usual bumbling minions, he might have shot her by now for daring to doubt him. Yet the sight of her, in a white mini-dress that hugged her curves like a latex glove, soothed his usual rage and roused a different sort of fire inside him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou are wrong. It is HimTak who underestimates me,\u201d he replied. His voice was deathly calm, though his heart was thundering in his chest. \u201cBut even if this hope should be dashed,\u201d he continued, \u201cthere is another, fail-proof plan already in effect. Four of our own are preparing to return to their motherland as we speak. There, they shall \u2018set the stage\u2019 for the unleashing of a biochemical weapon even more deadly than&#8211;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShh!\u201d Sexi suddenly hissed, pressing a taloned finger to her wine-colored lips. \u201cDrums.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Rough fell silent as his prot\u00e9g\u00e9 shambled into the room. \u201cDrums,\u201d he repeated, offering an uneasy smile. \u201cHas Sexi nursed you back to health?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sexi smirked beneath her naughty nurse headdress, apparently pleased with herself.<\/p>\n<p>Drums, on the other hand, looked anything but pleased &#8212; his expression was murderous. \u201cI\u2019ma <em>gut<\/em> Carter wit dis,\u201d he spat, holding up the gleaming, silver hook Sexi had affixed to his stump. \u201cIf it be the last thang I do, I\u2019ma live to see dat boy wriggle like a worm on da end of dis for what he done to me, you know what I\u2019m sayin\u2019?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know what you\u2019re saying,\u201d Dr. Rough assured him consolingly, resting a hand on the shoulder of his good arm. \u201cBut don\u2019t you worry. The hook is only temporary. Dr. Rough will make you a new hand, a far superior hand, just as he did with your eye. Our friend 00Carter will soon find that in maiming you, he has only served to strengthen you once more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd in the meantime\u2026\u201d purred Sexi, trailing her fingernails very lightly down the injured arm. Drums shuddered with the phantom sensation that continued all the way to the tips of his absent fingers. \u201c\u2026I think you\u2019ll find that a hook can come in quite <em>handy<\/em> for some things. No pun intended,\u201d she tittered.<\/p>\n<p>Drums\u2019s face fell into a scowl, but Sexi wiped it away with her index finger, which she kissed before placing it tenderly on his lips. Dr. Rough\u2019s heart thundered louder as he watched her finger pull back, curling seductively to beckon Drums as she slunk away from him. He followed her as she strutted to the window. \u201cScratching, for instance,\u201d she went on in her sex kitten\u2019s purr, tossing her head so that her mane of hair went swinging over one shoulder. She drew her nails slowly down her exposed neck, leaving faint lines on her soft, cocoa skin. \u201cTiger Lily\u2019s got an itch. It\u2019s down deep\u2026 somewhere she can\u2019t scratch. I bet you could reach it for her, eh, Captain Hook?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Drums narrowed his one blue eye, looking furious and aroused at the same time. Behind them, Dr. Rough felt the same. But Sexi\u2019s hungry gaze lingered only on Drums.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat, you s\u2019posed to be Tiger Lily?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust switch this nurse cap for some feathers, and I\u2019m your Indian princess,\u201d she murmured, sidling up to him.<\/p>\n<p>Thankfully, the nauseating scene playing out before Dr. Rough was interrupted by MJ, who waddled in carrying a piece of paper in his beak. \u201cGood boy, Michael,\u201d cooed Dr. Rough, unfolding the note. It read:<\/p>\n<p><em>Dr. Rough,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>We\u2019ll be departing shortly. We won\u2019t let you down.<\/em><br \/>\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; M<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>Forgetting Sexi and Drums for the moment, Dr. Rough gasped and rushed back to the window. He gazed out into the dusk and saw a quartet of minions boarding one of the FANS airboats. A moment later, his communicator beeped. He flipped open the panel on his black wrist cuff to see their four leering mugs filling the built-in screen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDr. Rough? We\u2019re ready for takeoff,\u201d said the eldest of the group.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood luck, minions,\u201d Dr. Rough spoke into the watch.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we make the necessary arrangements, we\u2019ll contact you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Rough nodded. \u201cI\u2019ll meet you at the rendezvous point in Canada,\u201d he affirmed. \u201cI\u2019ll be waiting for your signal. Take care, you four. May the FANS be with you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Down below, he saw them wave in departure, and the propeller revved to life. He didn\u2019t notice Drums put his arm around Sexi until she cried \u201cOw!\u201d as the point of his hook dug into her right shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSorry!\u201d Drums sputtered quickly.
